Gifts for Woodworkers That Earn a Spot on the Bench
Every woodworker already has a sander, a drill and a list of tools they'd buy for themselves if they had the money. The gifts they actually use are the ones that make those tools do more: sanding pads that fit what they already own, shaping abrasives for curves and holes, finishing pads that replace steel wool, and the small specialty tools they keep putting off buying. This guide is organized by the work they do, with fitment details so it works the first time.
- What the pad mounts on. The sanding pads below use a 5/8"-11 thread, the standard for U.S. angle grinders and rotary polishers. To run them in a drill or drill press, add a 5/8"-11 to 1/4" hex adapter (listed below). Check the pad's maximum RPM against the tool before running it. Angle grinders spin far faster than most wood sanding calls for.
- PSA or hook and loop. Look at the discs already on their shelf. Adhesive-backed (PSA) discs need a PSA pad, and hook-and-loop discs need a hook-and-loop pad. More on matching pads in our backing pad selection guide.
- Bench grinder or buffer arbor. Check the arbor size and the wheel diameter the guard will clear before buying a wheel. See bench grinder wheel fitment.
- Threaded insert size. The insert driver in this guide is sized for 1/4"-20 internal-thread knife inserts, the most common size for furniture, jigs and knock-down hardware.

For the Power Sander
Pads and adapters that put more discs on the tools they already own.
6" PSA Disc Pad Holder, Foam Backing, 5/8"-11
A foam-backed pad for 6" adhesive-backed sanding discs. The foam follows gentle contours on tabletops, panels and turned work instead of rocking on a hard edge. Also available as a 5" PSA pad and an 8" PSA pad if you know which disc size they buy.
4-1/2" Hook & Loop Backing Pads, 2 Pack, with 1/4" Shank Adapters
Two foam backer pads for hook-and-loop discs, each with a 1/4" shank adapter so they run in a drill right out of the package. Keep a coarse grit on one and a fine grit on the other and grit changes take seconds.
DA3 5/8"-11 to 1/4" Hex Shank Drill Adapter
Converts any 2" to 6" backing pad with a 5/8"-11 thread to a 1/4" hex shank for drills and drill presses. Pair it with the 6" PSA pad and a drill or drill press becomes a sanding tool with no new machine to buy.
For the Carver & Shaper
Curves, coves, inside holes and texture. The places a random orbit sander can't reach.
50 Piece Cartridge & Spiral Roll Kit
Mini cones and cylinders in multiple grits with mandrels. Cylinders smooth inside curves and coves, and cones get into tight radii, chair-spindle transitions and carved detail. One box covers the shaping work that usually ends up as hand sanding.
SM-468 Slotted Mandrel Set, 4", 6" & 8", 1/4" Shank
Split-head mandrels that hold a strip of sandpaper, which wraps as it spins. They sand the inside of drilled holes, cutouts and pierced work, and the 8" length reaches deep holes like lamp bases. They use up scrap sandpaper too.
6" x 2" Black 40 Grit Extra Coarse Flap Brush Wheel
Extra-coarse non-woven that turns a bench grinder into a texturing station. On softwoods like pine, cedar and fir, it wears the soft earlywood faster than the harder latewood and raises the grain into a brushed, weathered surface for signs, mantels and reclaimed-look projects. It also strips old paint from salvaged boards.
For the Finisher
The last 10% of the project is the part everyone sees.
7447 & 7448 6" x 9" Hand Pads, 8 Pack
Four maroon fine and four gray ultra-fine non-woven pads. Use maroon to knock down raised grain and dust nibs between coats and gray for the final rub before the last coat or wax. They don't shed the way steel wool does, which matters under water-based finishes. More in sandpaper vs. steel wool.
10" x 3/4" Arbor 80 Ply Fine Muslin Buffing Wheel
An extra-thick, 1" wide fine muslin buff for bringing cured finishes and paste wax up to a gloss on bowls, boxes, pens and small parts. The soft cotton follows curves and doesn't cut into the finish.
Polishing Compound Kit, 6 Bars, 24 oz
Six 4 oz bars: black emery, brown tripoli, white rouge, general green, red jeweler's rouge and all-purpose blue. On a woodworking buffer, tripoli and white rouge are the two used on fully cured film finishes. The rest of the set covers the metal hardware, tool steel and brass that end up on every woodworker's bench. Test on scrap first.
Stocking Stuffers
Small, specific and the kind of thing they never get around to buying.
DT-4 1/4"-20 Threaded Insert Driver
Drives 1/4"-20 knife-thread inserts in brass, stainless or steel square and to depth, instead of fighting them in with a bolt and jam nut and hoping they don't go in crooked. Built for hardwood, where inserts are hardest to start. Anyone who builds knock-down furniture, jigs or shop fixtures will use it.
Durable Flex Hand Pad 4-1/2" x 9", Very Fine, 25 Pack
Very fine aluminum oxide non-woven pads that flex around moldings, spindles and profiles. Rust-free, so they're safe under water-based finishes. A 25 pack keeps the finishing bench stocked for a long time.
All Metal Buff Rake, 9" Stainless Steel
Cleans packed compound and residue off buffing wheels so they keep cutting evenly instead of glazing. A good add-on to the muslin wheel or compound kit.

Gift Buying FAQ
What do you get a woodworker who already has every tool?
Accessories that expand the tools they own and the consumables they go through. Sanding pads, shaping abrasives, finishing pads and specialty tools like an insert driver get used right away, and they're things woodworkers rarely buy for themselves.
Should I buy a PSA or a hook-and-loop sanding pad?
Match what's already on their shelf. PSA discs stick directly to the pad and sit very flat. Hook-and-loop discs can be pulled off and put back, which makes switching between grits fast. If you can't check, the 4-1/2" hook-and-loop 2 pack is the safer pick because it comes ready to run in a drill.
Can these sanding pads be used in a regular drill?
Yes. The 4-1/2" hook-and-loop pads include 1/4" shank adapters. The PSA pads have a 5/8"-11 thread, so they need the DA3 adapter, which converts 2" to 6" pads to a 1/4" hex shank for drills and drill presses.
What is a threaded insert driver used for?
Threaded inserts add machine threads to wood so furniture, jigs and fixtures can be bolted together and taken apart repeatedly. A driver installs the insert straight and to the right depth. A crooked insert means a bolt that never lines up. The DT-4 is sized for 1/4"-20 knife-thread inserts.
Can buffing compounds be used on wood?
On a fully cured film finish, yes. Brown tripoli and white rouge on a soft cotton or muslin wheel are used to bring finishes to a gloss. Don't buff bare wood with compound, and test on a scrap piece with the same finish first.
