A purpose-built collet that clamps on the flats of a hex shank instead of squeezing a round one — engineered specifically for air tool die grinders running 1/4" hex-shank bits and burrs.

Not compatible with 1/4" round shanks. This collet is built exclusively for 1/4" hexagon shanks and bits. If your bits have a round shank, keep your factory round collet — don't force a round shank into this one.

01 Why Hex Grip Beats Round Grip Under Load

A standard round collet holds a bit by squeezing a cylindrical shank from every side at once. It works, but it depends entirely on friction — and friction alone tends to lose the argument the moment torque climbs or the collet wears in.

A hex shank changes the geometry of the problem. Instead of relying on pure clamping friction, the six flats of the shank seat against matching flats inside the collet. The bit is keyed in place, not just squeezed. That means less shank spin under load, more consistent torque transfer from the tool to the bit, and less slop as the collet ages.

This collet is built around that geometry. It's not a round collet that happens to tolerate hex shanks — it's shaped to hold them the way they're meant to be held.

02 Hex Shank vs. Round Shank: Know What You're Buying

These are two different clamping systems, and mixing them up is the single most common mistake with this style of collet. Check your bit's shank before you order.

Quick Way to Check

Look at the bit's shank end-on. If you can see six distinct flat faces, it's hex. If it's a smooth circle with no visible edges, it's round. When in doubt, a pair of open-end wrench jaws will seat flush against a hex shank and won't against a round one.

03 Fitment & Installation

This collet is designed for air tool die grinders — the compact, high-RPM pneumatic tools used for deburring, port work, and detail grinding. It is not a bit itself; it's the clamping element that sits in your die grinder's collet nut and grips the hex-shank accessory you're running.

  • Disengage the spindle lock (or hold the shaft with the supplied wrench flats) and back off the collet nut on your die grinder.
  • Remove the factory round collet, if one is currently installed.
  • Seat the Pro-Graad hex collet fully into the collet nut pocket.
  • Insert the 1/4" hex-shank bit until it bottoms out against the collet, then thread the nut back on by hand.
  • Lock the spindle and snug the nut with a wrench — firm, not overtightened. The hex geometry is doing the holding; you're not relying on crushing force alone.
  • Spin the tool briefly with no load to confirm the bit runs true before starting work.

04 RPM & Safety

Never exceed the maximum rated RPM of the collet, the bit, or the die grinder — whichever number is lowest governs. Running any rotary accessory past its rated speed increases the risk of shank fatigue, collet wear, and bit failure.

  • Confirm your die grinder's no-load RPM against the collet and bit ratings before the first use.
  • Re-check the nut torque periodically — vibration can back off even a properly seated collet nut over time.
  • Inspect the hex flats for rounding or wear before each session; a worn collet loses its keyed grip and reverts to relying on friction alone.
