Density, Grit & Abrasive — How to Pick the Right Wheel
Three independent decisions. Getting them right means better finish quality, longer wheel life, and less wasted money on the wrong spec.
Density sets how hard and conformable the wheel is — not how coarse it cuts. 7 is softest, flexes into contours, best for finishing and delicate parts. 8 is the all-rounder for mixed deburring and finishing. 9 is hardest — holds its shape under load, best for heavy deburring, sharp edges, and flat surfaces. Pro-Graad EXL wheels run density 7S, 8A, 8S, and 9S.
Pick by material. Aluminum Oxide — tough, blocky grain — is the call for ferrous metals: carbon steel, stainless, alloy steel, and iron. Silicon Carbide — sharper, more friable — cuts cool with less pressure, making it right for aluminum, brass, copper, titanium, composites, and plastics. The 8A SKU (13617) runs aluminum oxide; all others run silicon carbide.
Grit sets the finish. Coarse for aggressive deburring and dull satin finishing. Medium for general deburring and blending. Fine for satin finishing and light cleanup. Very Fine for the smoothest finish passes. Density and grit are separate specs.
