A coated abrasive is a flat sheet of grit. It's fast on flat steel and useless the moment the surface curves, drops into a corner, or the coating starts to load up. A bristle disc solves the problem coated abrasives can't: cleaning and light deburring on contoured, interrupted, and interior surfaces — without gouging, glazing, or changing the geometry of the part.

01What A Bristle Disc Actually Is
Forget sandpaper glued to a backing. A bristle disc is built from stiff polymer filaments arranged like spokes around a central hub. The abrasive grain — a ceramic and aluminum oxide blend — is molded throughout the entire bristle, not coated on the surface.
That single design difference is why they behave nothing like a coated abrasive:
Self-Renewing Cut
As each bristle tip wears down, fresh grain is exposed underneath. The disc doesn't "dull" the way a flap disc glazes over — it keeps presenting new abrasive until the filaments are physically worn away. You get a consistent finish from the first pass to the last.
It Conforms — Coated Abrasives Don't
The bristles flex independently. Run one across a pipe, a fillet weld, a stamped radius, or into the corner of a box section and the filaments wrap the contour instead of skating across the high spots. A flap disc only ever touches the peaks.
Cool-Running, Low-Pressure
Bristle discs cut with light pressure and generate far less heat than a grinding wheel or aggressive flap disc. On thin-gauge stainless and aluminum — where heat tint and warping are real problems — that matters. Let the disc do the work; leaning on it just wears the bristles faster without cutting faster.
They Won't Load or Glaze
Paint, adhesive, powder coat, and soft contaminants clog coated abrasives fast. The open geometry of a bristle disc sheds that debris instead of packing it into the grit. This is why they're the default for stripping coatings off metal without wrecking a fresh sheet of abrasive every square foot.
02Why The 5/8"-11 Threaded Hub Matters
Every disc in this lineup is a 4-1/2" disc with a 5/8"-11 threaded center — the same thread as your angle grinder spindle. That's a deliberate choice, and it removes two points of failure most abrasive setups fight with.

03When Bristle Discs Beat Coated Abrasives
This is the section that saves you money. Bristle discs are not a replacement for a grinding wheel or a flap disc — they win in a specific set of jobs where coated abrasives are the wrong tool. Reach for a bristle disc when:
The surface is curved, contoured, or interrupted. Pipe, tube, fillet welds, stamped parts, castings, fabricated corners. Anywhere a flat abrasive can only touch the high points, bristles wrap the shape.
You need to clean without removing base metal. Stripping paint, rust, mill scale, weld discoloration, or coatings off a part you want to keep the dimensions of. A flap disc removes coating and steel. A bristle disc lifts the coating and leaves the substrate.
You're working heat-sensitive metal. Thin stainless and aluminum discolor and warp under a hot, hard abrasive. The cool, light cut of a bristle disc cleans without cooking the part.
You're getting into corners, radii, and interior surfaces. The one place flap discs flat-out can't reach. The independent flex of the bristles lets them work down into geometry a rigid disc rides over.
The coating loads everything else up. Gummy paint, adhesive, and powder coat that clog a fiber or flap disc in seconds get thrown clear by the open bristle geometry.
Bristle discs are cleaning, blending, and light-deburring tools. If you need heavy stock removal, aggressive weld knockdown on flat plate, or to grind an edge back — a flap disc or grinding wheel is still the right call. Use the right tool; don't wear out a bristle disc doing a grinder's job.
04The Bristle Disc Grit & Color Chart
Every grit is color-coded so you can identify it across the shop at a glance. Coarse strips and removes; fine cleans and blends. Match the grit to the aggressiveness of the job, then step finer if you need a better finish.

Start with the finest grit that will do the job. It's always faster to step coarser if you need more bite than to fix the scratch pattern a too-coarse disc left behind. For most cleaning-and-blend work, 80 (Yellow) is where to start.

Paint & Coating Removal
Thick or stubborn coatings: start at 36 (Brown) or 50 (Green). Thinner paint or where you want to protect the substrate: 80 (Yellow).
Rust & Scale
Heavy rust and mill scale: 36 (Brown). Surface rust and light scale: 50 (Green) to 80 (Yellow).
Weld Cleanup & Discoloration
Knocking back weld burn and heat discoloration: 50 (Green) or 80 (Yellow), then blend into the surrounding surface with 120 (White).
Deburring & Edge Break
Light deburring: 80 (Yellow). Fine edge break where you don't want to round the part over: 120 (White) or 220 (Red).
Finishing & Pre-Polish
Blending scratch patterns and prepping for a final finish: 120 (White) into 220 (Red). The Red disc is your setup step before buffing or polishing.

07Mounting, Speed & Safe Use
Mounting: Spin the disc onto the 5/8"-11 grinder spindle by hand until seated. No backing pad or adapter required. To remove, hold the spindle lock and unthread.
Speed: These are built to run at standard 4-1/2" angle grinder speeds. Never exceed the maximum RPM marked on the disc, and match the disc to a grinder rated at or below that limit.
Technique: Use light, even pressure and let the bristle tips do the cutting. Leaning into the disc doesn't cut faster — it just wears the filaments and can flatten the bristles. Keep the disc moving; work in the direction that keeps debris flowing away from you.
